Welcome to Season 4 Episode 5
Today I speak with Dr Robyn Thompson, Founder of The Thompson Method for Breastfeeding.
Robyn’s offerings to breastfeeding women is based on over 45 years of experience as a midwife and her PhD research, which explored why so many women are discharged from hospital with breastfeeding complications.
The fact is that even though 92% of women want to breastfeed and initiate feeding after birth, 80% will give formula in week one, and only 14% are still exclusively breastfeeding at six months.
And the number one reason why mums say they discontinue feeding is PAIN.
If you feel like you have failed or struggled with breastfeeding, know that you are not alone.
Robyn and I both agree that respectful and individualised care is key to success as well as early education and preparation. This is why we focus on the first 3 Golden Hours and core principles at She Births to help you have a more extended breastfeeding experience.
The Thompson Method challenges our commonly accepted cultural approaches, which are often forceful and rushed inside our hospital systems.
In this episode, we chat about:
- Importance of personalised one on one expert support
- The one thing you must never allow others to do with your baby
- The importance of HOW we hold our babies, especially their little heads
- The numerous ways systems fail families with feeding and birth and what you can do to avoid them
