At She Births® we’ve empowered more than 4,000 couples to experience better and more beautiful births through our Weekend Course and Online Course. Until now, mostly Australians and couples in the western world have benefited from the knowledge and tools that She Births® offers.
But it’s always been my vision to better support those in developing countries too, so I’m incredibly proud to announce our partnership with Totohealth.
From now on, for every couple that books into the She Births® Weekend or Online Course, we are sponsoring one African family for a whole year to receive pregnancy, birth and childhood support through Totohealth’s revolutionary mobile technology platform.
Our collaboration with Totohealth helps close the gap too commonly experienced by women in developing countries – called the ‘too little too late’ phenomena, by the United Nations Maternal Taskforce. (Us Western folk suffer from the ‘too much too soon’ approach.)
Totohealth is a unique SMS/Voice message program that has helped over 14,000 families connect with their babies throughout pregnancy, prepare for birth and become aware of numerous risks for themselves and their bubs. This helps reduce maternal and child mortality, and detects developmental abnormalities in early stages.
The program has moved birth and baby care from dangerous and extremely remote areas into the safety of health clinics or hospitals. Totohealth has increased the average birth rate in hospitals from 65% to 98% and continues to prevent numerous complications from occurring. Remember that many of these families live hundreds of miles from the nearest health clinic. So, they need information that allows them to know when to go to the clinic and what for – so they can at least plan their trip and find a way to get there! You can read some of the messages they send to couples here.
We will be working with Totohealth to create birth education texts – and visiting soon I hope. Although these women, primarily in Kenya and Tanzania, are not exposed to media-generated fear of birth, they are travelling into an unfamiliar hospital setting with an unprepared partner which can be daunting for everyone involved. Dads have no idea how to help (much like here) and women are often left without their familiar faces and sisters to help from the village. So, that is where She Births® steps in – how awesome is that?!
Together with Totohealth and our amazing She Births® community we are helping to make quality birth education accessible to these women – so a big thank you to all of you.

In case you missed it, She Births® was all over the news this week!
I got to speak to Channel 7 News as part of their Health Report last week about our HCF Funded She Births® Trial – which is enabling HCF members to book in for a She Births® Weekend Course in Sydney at no cost!! Do you know someone that could benefit?
And I chatted to Sydney Morning Herald about the importance of emotional support and effective partner support for birth, and why doulas are fast becoming the ‘must-have accessory’ alongside our program.
You’ll also find me answering q’s about all things pregnancy, birth and parenting on 7TWO’s House of Wellness program every Sunday with the lovely Zoe Foster as presenter. Catch up on past episodes here.
