Happy International Day of the Midwife #IDM2019. Today, we acknowledge the wonderful and important role midwives play in both catching and helping us birth our babies. It is a true shame that not enough women get access to continuous midwifery care around the world, including Australia. For those lucky enough to be cared for by a midwife, continuous or not, this is your day to say thanks!
Jump on Facebook and tag your midwife, or just shout their name from the rooftops, and let them know you appreciate all their hard work, their crazy hours, all the squished hand holding when you are in pain and all those yucky gory bits they have to look at and do for us 😉
Leroy and I were definitely saved by our independent midwife, Hilary Hunter. She was so significant in our lives (without her I know I would have had a c-section) that we decided to name Leroy after her (in part). She was compassionate, present and resourceful – a stand when I needed and a strong advocate all the way that she made my birth a beautiful two days 😉
Continuous care from a midwife is the gold standard in maternity care. There is nothing that compares to the knowledge, quality, time and love you receive when employing your own – but so few women have the financial or physical access. If you are keen to support the growth of midwifery care then check out and donate to the Birth Time Documentary and sign a petition here.
We are really proud of the wonderful work our own She Births® Educators and midwives do around Australia too in supporting continuity of care for women; Danielle Syme in Orange, Kelly Hardy and Brittney Gavin in Geelong. The Royal Hospital for Women has been making their home birth program (ie. continuous midwifery care) available for free over the last year with great results and a number of She Births® mums have birthed at home.
In my experience love is the most important quality to have in the room during childbirth. And a practitioner skilled in normal birth, who is able to manage and assess risk as well as provide that LOVE is the best option for mums. Someone pointed out to me the other day that it’s important to remember that Doctors save babies, but for every 10 – 20 that are saved by a Doctor, there is another 80 – 90 that was saved by Midwives.
We are stoked to announce that our She Births® Show Podcast is recommended by the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) for its evidenced based content and is an CPD recognised activity. We have also reinstated the ability for midwives to attend a live Weekend Course and gain 13.5 credit points, for half price too! Find out more and apply here.
Excited to tell you that Byron Bay Weekend Courses are launching this month and we have had some great meetings in San Francisco with the launch of our WorkPlace program. I really believe that bringing honour to our pregnancy and family in a corporate environment will be a revolutionary next step in #fourthwavefeminism.
Our next Podcast episode, is out very soon and is an interview with the awe-inspiring doula, educator and filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro, from the documentary Orgasmic Birth (that I recommend every family watches prior to birth). Debra and I have a show for you – from orgasms to advocacy!
Next Sunday is Mother’s Day and we have lots of special gifts coming your way from our amazing collaborators – so stay tuned.
xxx Nadine
